Whine from Differential on RV8

Postby Peter Varley » 03 Aug 2017 07:20

Hello,
My RV8 has done about 65,000 K Ms and there is a 'Whine" coming from the diff. Has anyone else experienced this in a similar number of KMs/Miles ?

If I recall correctly, we had a car that we had to change the crown wheel and pinion on after 33,000kms.

I have 65k km on mine without an issue,
I did ask Clive Wheatley in the past about expected life of the RV8 back axle with the torque of the v8.
He mentioned that the axle was very long living and shouldn't generate any issues upto about 80k miles.

Hi
I've now done 77,000 miles, shock horror, I do have a "tick" at very slow speeds circa 15 miles an hour or less, apparent coming upto junctions but its been there for the last 8,000 miles without apparent ill effect and isn't changing and may have always been there.
Hope that helps?

Be sure that the whine is coming from the axle? When does it occur, when accelerating or when coasting? In all gears or only in one?

My RV8 has a whine in 3rd gear when accelerating, but the LT77 [or R380] box is a bruiser built for Range Rovers etc. and isn't the quietest.

The tick might actually be from the speedo cable or even from a front calliper, but could also be a number of other things. I had an annoying muffled "bonk" when accelerating and decelerating that I thought might be the diff, turned out to be the rubber mounted fuel pump moving back and forth in its rubber mount. 2 Tywraps solved it.
