RV8 replacement heater blower motor

Postby Bob Parker » 18 Apr 2017 04:33

Dear friends,
Can anyone direct me to a suitable replacement for a burned out heater blower motor for my RV8 ?
Most likely to be someone who has faced a similar issue - a cloud of smoke into the cabin, a hasty halt, bonnet lifted and the unmistakable stink of burned wiring.
Many thanks. Bob in NZ.

The motor is actually a heater motor from a LHD Rover Metro - yes LHD, with a wiring harness change. Don't ask why but it is. Don't know know of any sources of spares in the UK. Is it possible to get the electric motor rebuilt locally I wonder?

Thanks George,
Hadn't looked at the rebuild to be honest, but thought one of you chaps may have an off the shelf solution. Can't remember when I saw a LHD Metro, or any Metro for that matter. Would still like to track down a new one if possible.

(PS your namesake kiwi George Wilder was a folk-hero in NZ, a prison escaper who went bush and eluded the Police for many many months. His original crime - he loved nice cars and liked to borrow them. And not return them.)

Hi Bob
This may be a complete non starter for you with post etc. but I see Clive Wheatley has a genuine RV8 Heater Fan Motor listed for £255. I hope I don't get that expensive smell !

Hi Bob
I don't know if you found this thread in the V8 archive but it relates to your problem and may have some useful info particularly from George again when he was assisting on the same problem in 2011 !:

As he said then it looks like the rebuild route.

Thanks John,
An interesting thread. The existing motor is fairly well cooked. There is always a way! So I shall keep looking.

I found an old Metro heater at a local breaker here in France. Changed polarity to get it to turn the right way and it seems to have done the job.

Bob,
Clive's price would be the best option for you, I can probably get you a second hand one, but it will be somewhere around AUD$250.00 + postage.

There is an option that might be a little cheaper than a new one, take the old motor to a Motor Rewind specialist. These guys are usually o=found in most large cities, and can often salvage what is left of a motor, [even though it looks bad to you] and give you back a working motor with new bearings etc. The most common cause of burnout is that the motor is stuck [frozen bearing] or foreign object in the fan wheel. These need to be checked before installing new or rewound motor. You can check for them in Yellow Pages. Get an estimate first of course.
